Happy New Year 2017

John 1: 1- 18

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He was in the beginning with God.
All things came to be through him,
and without him nothing came to be.
What came to be through him was life,
the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

He was in the world,
and the world came to be through him,
but the world did not know him.
He came to what was his own,
but his own people did not accept him.

But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God.

And the Word became flesh
and made his dwelling among us,
and we saw his glory,
the glory as of the Father’s only Son,
full of grace and truth.

John testified to him and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said,
‘The one who is coming after me ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.’”
From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace, because while the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God,* who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him.

REFLECTION:
Let your New Year 2017 resolution include letting God be God in your life and therefore learn to allow divine love, mercy and providence to direct all your actions, words and thoughts.

Happy New Year!

The Meaning of Christmas

The Meaning of Christmas

The scepter shall never depart from Judah,
or the mace from between his legs
~ Genesis 49: 10

Summary: The true and triple meaning of Christmas are that, first and foremost God kept his promise to mankind, secondly it is a family feast and last but not the least Christmas is the manifestation of God adopting the entire mankind into one Jewish tribe under “Judah.”

God Fulfilled His Promise
In the book of Genesis, God promised that Judah will be the custodian of the scepter forever and the mace will never depart from him! This prophecy was fulfilled in our Lord Jesus Christ, who was sent to the world by God to be the prince of peace and the messiah.
Christmas is therefore the feast in which we acknowledge the faithfulness of our God to keep to his promises and as a result by faith, we can continue to rely on his steadfastness in our lives.

Family feast: Genealogy of Jesus Christ
The people of Israel waited about 42 generations before the Christ Jesus was born in Bethlehem!
According to St. Matthew, there was a total number of fourteen generations each from Abraham to David, David to the Babylonian exile or deportation and finally from the Babylonian exile or deportation to the Christ. Beginning from Abraham, the account of the genealogy of Jesus Christ is a long list of some unfamiliar names and yet, God in his infinite wisdom and divine mercy allowed some of the imperfections in the family to become the instrument of perfection. There are many messages we can abide with from this development, namely, no human family is perfect and God can use anyone who is willing to serve him in truth and in spirit. Furthermore, this long list has what is obvious in life; the beginning and the end. The evangelist Luke traces his own genealogy of Jesus Christ to Adam and Eve, therefore transforming the human race to what God intended it to be; ONE BIG AND INDIVISIBLE FAMILY UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF JESUS CHRIST, WHO IS THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF THE LIVING GOD.

God’s Adopted Family
Christmas is a family feast in which the almighty God adopted the entire human race under the umbrella of the tribe of Judah. The implications are obvious when we consider how we relate to one another! Nobody is therefore a foreigner in the house of God, as we are all called upon to share in the same table, the throne of the grace of our God through the birth of the infant Jesus Christ.
According to the psalmist, “In him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed; all the nations shall proclaim his happiness.

REFLECTIONS:
Christmas is an opportunity for us to think about God’s faithfulness and loving plans for mankind! The Almighty promised us that he will come and save humanity, and behold he did it by sending his Only Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ to come to us through the Blessed Virgin Mary as an infant baby born in Bethlehem and from the lineage of King David through his adopted father Joseph the son of Jacob.
Christmas is also a time for us to reflect and appreciate the human family! No family is perfect in terms of virtues and charity; nevertheless, we are being challenged to focus on the love and faithfulness of God to weather the storms of life such as discrimination, racism and hatred.

It took about 42 generations from the time of Abraham to the birth of Jesus Christ! We must learn patience, perseverance and endurance no matter what we may be going through because, when God is involved in a situation, the Almighty always keep his promises. The Israelite waited for the messiah in spites of the ups and downs of life and their faithfulness is rewarded beyond human imagination.
In the house of God, we are one and nobody is a foreigner or alien, but we are all citizens!
This then is the meaning of Christmas to me!
God bless you. Amen.

Prostate cancer sufferer ‘cured’ by blasting tumors with testosterone

Prostate cancer sufferer ‘cured’ by blasting tumors with testosterone

A man with advanced prostate cancer that didn’t seem to be treated has been “cured” by a new experimental therapy.
The new treatment involved shocking tumours to death using testosterone.
Other very ill men involved in the trial saw astonishing results, with tumours being seen to shrink and the progress of the disease stopping in its tracks.
Overall, most of the people involved in the trial seemed to undergo positive results. Scientists tested that by looking at levels of Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA), a blood marker used to monitor prostate cancer – and found that it fell in most of the 47 people involved in the study.

Is Your House Built On Rock Or Sand?

Is Your House Built On Rock Or Sand?

“Everyone who listens to these words
of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man
who built his house on rock.”
~Matthew 7: 24

Literally speaking, a wise man will not want to have sand as the foundation of his house because when the floods come, without doubt, such a house will crumple! It therefore make sense that the foundation of any given house should be made from rock- an epitome of durability, strength and protection against heavy rain and other natural disasters that a sandy foundation cannot withstand.
In our contemporary society, we try our best to insure our lives and properties, even subscribing to flood and fire home insurances among others.

Today Jesus Christ is telling us to lay our house on the solid foundation, the rock of durability, dependability and steadfastness, which can protect against any kind of disaster! However this house is not the physical structures that we commit so much towards such as the payment of the mortgage, taking care of the lawns, changing old windows and ensuring that it is covered by the necessary home insurances. Jesus is asking us about the real house- which is you and me- the Temple of the living God!

What kind of insurances have you purchased for this “House”?
Did you buy life insurance for this house?
Did you purchase disaster insurance for this house?
What about health insurance?
Did you buy unemployment insurance for this house?
Did you already buy funeral and the grave place for this house?
What about car insurance necessary if you drive to protect against accidents and liabilities?

We spend countless of hours trying relentlessly to protect our ephemeral being and yet may find it difficult to appreciate the necessity of investing in the eternal “House” or “Temple of God”- of which we are!
The advent season is the preparatory era in which Jesus uniquely calls us to have a second thought, a real reflection on what is actually important to us without losing the physical insurances that we pay for ever seconds of our lives on earth.

The foolish man may have a beautiful and gigantic house, saturated with all the necessities of living in this world, such as high-tech building, anti-burglary or anti-theft system, the best swimming pool and luxurious lawns, the most decorated living rooms, dining rooms and even bedrooms, however during the slightest sign of rain and flood, this beautiful house is among the first to crumble because, fanciful as it may seems, it was build on a very fragile, unreliable and weak foundation synonymous to sand-house that kids built on the sea shores.

On the contrary, the wise man does the complete opposite; building his house on a solid and rock foundation which can withstand any kind of natural disasters!
The foolish man is that “House” which listens to the words of eternal life through our Lord Jesus Christ and refused to act on them! In fact, these Good news or Gospel failed to change his course in life and unfortunately and most regrettably, he continued in his life of sin, hatred and wickedness. Such a foolish man put his trust not in God, but on ephemeral principalities and powers such as money, personal talents and qualifications, and manipulates others for his selfish gain.

When this foolish man encounters challenges in life, because his “House” was built on sand, he turned to blaming others for his crisis or even ready to kill in order to experience temporary relief. Yes, he may be able to overcome some of the difficulties; nevertheless, such solutions are neither durable nor everlasting and consequently will lead to the loss of his soul!
The wise man recognized the need for God and the necessity of his complete dependence on God, through Jesus Christ who is the manifestation of the solid rock that forms the corner stone or foundation of the building!

As we head out today, please let us allow Jesus Christ gifts of the Holy Spirit to penetrate our souls and make our hearts to love again, hope again and have faith again, not in ourselves, but in the almighty God, who nothing is impossible to do.

Remember to build your house on the Rock- Jesus Christ and reject the use of sand- our individual talents and capacities! If you listen to the words of Jesus Christ and live in accordance to them, you are building your house on the rock and marching toward eternal glory.
May the good Lord bless his words in our hearts today!

Advent- The Season of Hope!

Advent- The Season of Hope!

Come, O come, Emmanuel!
                                                           Stay awake! . . . Be prepared.

Today is the first Monday in the first week of the Advent season and again the scriptural passages are enlightening our hearts and warming us all toward the great expectation- the manifestation of God’s infinite love, mercy and kindness toward mankind in the baby Jesus Christ, who is indeed the Son of God, the Emmanuel- God with us and the Savior of the world and last but not the least, the King of kings and Lord of Lord and God of gods.

Advent is the season of hope and hope is what helps us step out and believe in what we cannot see and also it is God’s grace to accept that in life there is a certain amount of mystery to our faith and to still be confident that God can work in our lives in such a way that his plans for us remained adamantly steadfast irrespective of our shortcomings, provided we recognize these weaknesses and offer them to the almighty!

Our hope is not in any way a blind hope because we are all witnesses to the great interventions in our lives on a daily basis by the almighty God, who comfort us in our distress, heal the sick and feed the hungry, and use us as instrument to bring peace to the world.
I rejoiced because they said to me, “We go up to the house of the LORD.”
The Psalmist appropriately understood the significance of being in the house of the LORD, in that, the real abode of haven is to be found in no other place but in the house of the LORD.

This great desire should spurn us to live in accordance with the will of God for us!
In the house of the LORD, there is life!
In the house of the LORD, there is love!
In the house of the LORD, there is peace!
In the house of the LORD, there is healing!
In the house of the LORD, there is humility!
In the house of the LORD, there is perseverance!
In the house of the LORD, there is hope!
In the house of the LORD, there is faith!
In the house of the LORD, there is joy!
In the house of the LORD, there is forgiveness!
In the house of the LORD, there is generosity!
In the house of the LORD, there is grace!
In the house of the Lord, there is the Holy Spirit!

Let us ask Jesus Christ, our Emmanuel to come into our lives today!
Let us go out and seek his face among our brothers and sisters!
Let us go and share the joy of this season of Advent with those we shall encounter today.
And above all, like the Centurion in the Gospel of Mathew, in humility, let us acclaimed, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant (in our case our souls) will be healed.”

May the good Lord, bless his words in our hearts. Amen!

Be Vigilant and Pray!

Be Vigilant and Pray!

Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have
the strength to stand before the Son of Man.”
~ Luke 21:36

John said: An angel showed me the river of life-giving water, sparkling like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the street. On the either side of the river grew the tree of life that produces fruit twelve times a year, once each month; the leaves of the trees serve as medicine for the nations.
This was the vision or revelation of the new heaven and the new earth, as the old one has passed away!
How many of us shall be worthy to dwell in this Kingdom of eternal glory?

Today is the last day in the Church liturgical calendar before the Advent Season commences. The scriptural readings present the eschatological account or the end time in which the good shall be rewarded for their love and faithfulness and the bad will suffer the punishment of eternal damnation.
While this narration might be frightening and terrifying, the reality is that God so loved the world that he gave his Only Begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ to die for us and whosoever believed in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Regrettably, many are called but few are chosen because of our stubbornness and godlessness!
Today is yet another opportunity that our God is presenting to us again and this time, it is the Son of God that is speaking directly to our hearts, pleading and urging us at the same time to “Be vigilant.”

We must be vigilant and never get drowsy or lethargic in the practice of our faith!
We must be vigilant to always love no matter our circumstances!
We must be vigilant and remain faithful
We must be vigilant and remain hopeful
We must be vigilant and exercise the gifts of the Holy Spirit
We must be vigilant and avoid evil
We must be vigilant and avoid hatred
We must be vigilant and continue to help those in need.

The Revelation of St. John’s account of heaven even though hardly completely comprehensible to the human hearts, nevertheless, manifest to all mankind that God is faithful and trustworthy and those who run to him shall never be disappointed.

Marana tha! Come, Lord Jesus!
Come, let us sing joyfully to the LORD; let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us joyfully sing psalms to him.
For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods;
In his hands are the depths of the earth and the tops of the mountains are his.
His is the sea, for he has made it and the dry land, which his hands have formed.
Come, let us bow down in worship; let us kneel before the LORD who made us.
For he is our God and we are the people he shepherds, the flock he guides.
Marana tha! Come, Lord Jesus!

My beloved, as you step out today, think about what Jesus Christ is asking of all of us; to be vigilant and never lose hope, because as long as we look up to him, the almighty God shall give us the help necessary for us to wait in joyful hope for that day in which we all shall receive the reward of eternal life.
May the love of our God guide and direct every of our actions, thoughts and words today, so that we too may bring glory to the name of the God we serve, as did the Saints of God before us. And we ask all these through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen!

U.S.A. For Africa - We Are the World!

U.S.A. For Africa - We Are the World

This Song is as relevant to the World as it was in the '80s!
Enjoy both the lyric and video and God bless you all.

There comes a time when we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
And its time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all
We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somehow will soon make a change
We are all a part of Gods great big family
And the truth, you know,
Love is all we need1
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
Its true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
Send them your heart so they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
Its true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Let us realize that a change can only come
When we stand together as one
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
Its true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
Its true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

The Feast of Christ the King and Year of Mercy

The Feast of Christ the King and Year of Mercy

Our God is called by many names;
however one of the best is the
God of Mercy and Compassion

The Year of Mercy was declared by Pope Francis and began on December 8th 2015 on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and will be closing on November 20th 2016, which coincidentally is on the Feast of Christ the King and the end of the liturgical calendar of the Catholic (Universal) Church.
Of the numerous names that our God has been called, one of the best ever is as the God of Compassion, which by implication means the God of Mercy or the Merciful God! In mercy the true and complete essence of the loving kindness of the almighty God is made manifest beyond human imagination.
Today as we begin our celebration of Christ the King in recognition of the universality of the reign of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, King of King and Lord of lords and the epitome of mercy, let us reflect upon the infinite goodness and divine providence of our God in the lives of the faith.
What does “Mercy” mean to you? If one of the best attribute of our God is being merciful and or compassionate, how can you describe your relationship with others? Are you merciful and compassionate towards others, especially those who are at your mercy?
Jesus Christ, the King of endless glory and Divine Mercy, you are the epitome and manifestation of God the Father and the physical appearance of the Holy Spirit and in him we are called upon to become the arms of “Mercy” to all that we encountered today.

Therefore in order to worthily celebrate the Feast of Christ the King and the closing of the Year of Mercy, we must become like “Mercy” or “Compassion” or in a nutshell another Jesus Christ!
For us to become “Mercy”, we must know what Mercy is and live it! Consequently below are some examples of how we can become the instrument of Mercy and share in the Kingship of the Feast of Christ the King:
By simple definition Mercy is compassion or forgiveness shown towards someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm! However this definition from a pragmatic perspective defines our actions or inaction that enables others to see Jesus Christ in us!

Mercy is welcoming those who are helpless and hopeless
Mercy is feeding the poor
Mercy is healing the sick
Mercy is providing for those who lack
Mercy is forgiving others who may have hurt us
Mercy is sharing our times and fortune with others
Mercy is supporting others
Mercy is nurturing others
Mercy is seeking those who are lost until we find them
Mercy is accepting people that are different from us
Mercy is rejoicing with those who are rejoicing
Mercy is crying with those who are crying
Mercy is visiting the sick
Mercy is freeing the captive
Mercy is clothing the naked
Mercy is comforting the afflicted
Mercy is praying for all mankind, living and the dead alike
Mercy is bearing wrongs patiently
Mercy is counseling the doubtful
Mercy is being able to love the unlovable
Mercy is lovingly correcting the wrongdoer
Mercy is remembering the pains without the heart for revenge

The Jubilee Year of Mercy will come to an end on November 20, 2016, which coincides with the Feast of Christ the King and the end of the current liturgical year and appropriately redirecting our minds and hearts toward the end time! Let us use this opportunity to grow in our personal relationship with God and become a better person.

Prayer:

Dear God,
Who is like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of your inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. Please come down and once again have compassion on us.
Touch us today with your Holy Spirit so that we may develop a personal relationship with you!
Guide our heart O Lord, our God that love may reside permanently and to the glory of your name.
And into your loving hand, we commend our spirit and raise our voices in praise and adoration for your divine mercy and providence in our lives.
Make us to be your “Mercy” in our world, so that we too may bring Jesus Christ to our neighbors and become the instrument of your love, hope and faith.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ we offer these prayers! Amen.

The RUSH HOUR

The Rush Hour

If the pressure to succeed overwhelms you, you are definitely not alone.

Nevertheless, life will be meaningless if all that matters to you is to succeed in life.

We live in a society where there seems to be no time for ourselves anymore!

Hardly do humanity STOP, REFLECT and CONTEMPLATE on the essence of our existence and most importantly our relationship with God.

There are the needs to answer the emails, voicemails and telephones as instantaneously as possible; otherwise the person at the other end might think something is wrong.

We invest time and energy preparing to cook the food, dress up for the Mass or going to church or even parties or other social gathering. In the same way, we commit greater time and energy trying to satisfy our Boss, families and friends, at the job place, at home and even in the neighborhood.

There is a RUSH to life that suggests we are the better person if only we can accomplish more and more things in a single day. Unfortunately, it is in that RUSH of life that I do believe we lose sight of the ability and the need to be REPLECTIVE people to use the gifts that the Lord has given to us to draw closer to our true source of life.

We RUSH to buy gifts!

We RUSH to cook food!

We RUSH to get dressed for the occasions!

We even RUSH to be out of the House of God!

We RUSH to make love!

We RUSH to judgment and conclusion!

We RUSH almost everything including ourselves.

By so doing, we fundamentally forget the very essence of our calling as a human being, who are supposed to be dedicated to the almighty God by putting our complete trust, hope and faith in the creator of heaven and earth and the source of eternal life.

Do we perhaps become a MACHINE today as we answer the call of many machines; asking for answers, decisions and replies? Have our lives become so mechanical? Have we lost sight of our true self as a result of the challenges of life?

The RUSH HOUR is hurting rather than helping and that is why Jesus Christ is telling us, asking us and demanding of us among others

  1. (1)   TO STOP AND REFLECT!
  2. (2)   RECOGNIZE THAT LIFE IS A GIFT
  3. (3)   LIVE THE MOMENT IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD
  4. (4)   ALLOW GOD’S VISION TO BE MANIFESTED IN YOU.
Please take a moment to reflect on how far you have come and why it is absolutely necessary for you to live in union with God as opposed to trying to live a live that is defined by the RUSH HOUR and MECHANICAL ATTRIBUTE.

Prayer

Dear Jesus Christ,You said, “It is written, My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.”Please help us today to recognize that we are the temple of the Lord, our God, your heavenly Father and touch our hearts so that we can let go of our mechanical lifestyle and become united with you in our daily lives.Give us the heart of flesh that we may love again and see you in everything.Thank you as we look forward to your healing, so that we can let go of the “RUSH HOUR” mentality and learn to depend completely on you.
Amen!

Father Sterling: Shepherd of Poorest of the Poor

Father Sterling:

Shepherd of Poorest of the Poor

The Reverend Father Donald A. Sterling is the first African American Priest to by ordain in the Archdiocese of Baltimore in the year of our Lord 1974 on May 11th. He is the shepherd of the Poorest of the Poor in the Archdiocese of Baltimore because of his commitment to the Black and other minority communities in terms of ministering to their physical and spiritual needs, while forgetting his own welfare.
In Baltimore, Maryland on May 25, 1793, Father Stephen Theodore Badin becomes the first Catholic priest to be ordained in the United States. The Archdiocese of Baltimore was established as a Diocese in the year 1789 and by simple arithmetic, it took the diocese approximately 4 years to have Father Badin ordained as a priest and almost two centuries or 185 years to have her first colored priest!

Trailblazers Black Priests prior to Father Sterling in Baltimore

There were however trailblazers before the epiphany of Father Sterling, as he is popularly called by everyone that encounter him.

We have Father James Healy (1830 – 1900), the first Black priest ordained in 1854, but outside the USA since at that time Blacks were not allowed to become a Catholic priest. His father is an Irish immigrant. He later became the bishop of Portland, Maine.

Then, we have Father Augustine Tolton (1854 – 1897) of Alton Illinois the first Black slave to become a priest after being ordained in 1886 in Paris, France.

Last but not the least among the first of the first is Father Charles Randolph Uncles (1859 – 1933), the first Black priest and also a Baltimorean who in 1891 to be ordained in the USA, specifically in Baltimore.

1974: Father Sterling, Pastor of the Poorest of the Poor

Father Donald A. Sterling, Pastor of the New All Saints Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Baltimore was born and raised in Baltimore City into a Catholic family. He began his priestly studies and formation for the Archdiocese of Baltimore at the Resurrection College, Kitchener, Ontario Canada! Between 1970 and 1974 he received his Bachelor of Science degree and Master of Divinity respectively from St. Mary’s Seminary College in Baltimore. In May 1974, he was ordained to the Priesthood of Jesus Christ for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore, becoming the FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN PRIEST in the Archdiocese.

The role played by Father Sterling transcend the traditional in the sense that, he carry the burden of the past, present and the future generation, as he constantly seek divine intervention and work hard to change the status quo of his people infected with the detrimental consequences of a broken system orchestrated by man inhumanity to man and fueled by fear, ignorance and unfounded hatred for divergence, and the maxim of the necessity for all to be our brother’s keeper. Even as he continued to carry the cross enumerated above in addition to so many others that bothers on perceptions and misunderstanding, his attitude remained focused on the needs of his people and over and again, you hear him admonishing the faithful to always allow their faith in God to be the guiding principles in their lives, irrespective of the path they might eventually prefer.
His guiding faith principle has always been to “Remember that God is in charge.”

The impact of Father Sterling especially among the Black Catholics is better imagined than describe for so many reasons; he is a member of many religious and community organizations including the National Black Seminarians Association and, an EXCO of the National Federal of Priest’s Council. A life- time member of the NAACP he served with the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus as a former president. He remained an active member of the Priests’ Council of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. A very passionate, articulate and spiritual pastor, a lecturer, revivalist and public speaker, but surprisingly very guarded too, Father Sterling can light up a dark room, make you cry and laugh for joy at the same time.

Mission Statement

At the New All Saints Roman Catholic Church community on West Baltimore, he guided the congregation with the singular and audacious Mission Statement which holistically stated and I quote
“New All Saints Congregation is a body of stewards of God’s goodness who are called to witness our belief, hope and love of God through prayer and worship (LITURGY), by actively loving our neighbors (SERVICE), by sharing the Good News thus making disciples (EVANGELIZATION), by identifying with the Body of Christ (FELLOWSHIP), and by establishing and forming one another to become more like Christ (EDUCATION).”

Father Sterling, the shepherd of the poorest of the poor through the articulation of the Mission Statement above has put into practice various means to achieve the well being of the individual person in our faith based community. The liturgy at New All Saints Catholic Church has remained one of the most uniquely integrated forms of worship, merging traditional Catholic hymns with a touch of Pentecostal and afro-centrism. The melodies are physically and spiritually appealing and the Liturgical dance ministry is electrifying to say the least to anyone opportune to worship in that church.

We must be our brother’s keepers and look out for each other are words never too far from Father Sterling’s sermons irrespective of the liturgical feasts or celebration of the Holy Eucharist. He pragmatically demonstrated this necessity by aggressively encouraging donations of time and resources to the church Pantry and the church also have the visible presence of the St. Vincent de Paul network. Evangelization according to Father Sterling means more than sharing the Good News or the Gospel! It entails the ability to act as a medium of conversion, role model and the Lord Jesus Christ to our neighbors too.

There are therefore various ministries within the church that carry out various functions tailored toward the needs of the community. The Legion of Mary for instance engages in the spreading of the Gospel through members’ visitation to the hospitals, prisons and nursing homes and not to mention to homes of folks that are in need of prayers and other spiritual supports.

The fellowship at the church is exhilarating for various reasons and even though is mostly African-American by virtue of location, members are however not limited to such. In fact there are sizable numbers of Caucasians and immigrants especially from Cameroon, Nigeria and Kenyan to name but a few. The Christian formations are both in line with the Catholic teachings and the pragmatism of our time, as Father Sterling has been able to influence Catechists to focus on ways of uplifting the spiritual and physical thirst of catechumen and their families. A visit to the New All Saints Roman Catholic Church Christmas Vigil and listening to Father Sterling narrative on the Nativity will convince you that this Man of God is indeed the curator of the knowledge of ancient Egypt, of the origin of various religion and how Christianity have been influenced by the uncountable traditions and yet remained steadfast to the Good News of Jesus Christ.

For over forty years, Father Sterling has remained dedicated, committed and resilient, and durable to his calling to shepherd his people, and for all these years and counting, it is with gratitude to the almighty God that our community and people have been blessed with the generosity, pragmatism and humanity in the person of our pastor.
I will also like to share a brief personal experience with this Man of God, who remained very humble at heart and open to everyone.

Personal Testimony

My first encounter with Father Sterling was in the year 2003 when I legally immigrated to the United States from Nigeria. After expressing countless frustrations with a process that was so new, confusing and seemly beneficial to those who could “milk” it or use the shortcut to get what they need, he calmly prayed for me and by extension to my wife and kids who at that time were still in Nigeria. There was also a comment he made that remained very dear to me even to this very moment and as I grow old in the country over time I begin to appreciate the wisdom in those words.
Then, my wife and kids joined me in the United States and I began my practice as a medical scientist while at the same time worshiping at New All Saints when time permits. By and large through the prayers and support of Father Sterling, the process of integration without forgetting who I am was easier than I anticipated.
My family was fortunate to have two of our children baptized by Father Sterling with one coincidentally taking his middle name of Anthony, of which we learned about just this year. I am experiencing another desert phenomenon and I heavily rely on Father Sterling for help, especially based on his own physical challenges that he may not really share but are obvious to many of the parishioners. As the challenges come, he offers them to God and let the almighty to do as he wills! This complete trust in divine intervention is among the most unique and passionate expression of his commitment to God.

Heal and Clean Baltimore: Freddie Gray!

Freddie Gray, an unarmed Baltimorean was terribly beaten by some Police officers and on April 19, 2015 died at Johns Hopkins Hospital! The initial justification for the arrest was that Mr. Gray has weapons, however this claim later turned out to be false and all hell broke on April 27 following his funeral as Baltimore was engulfed in riots and anarchy to say the least. Through this painful era, Father Sterling maintained a visible presence in support of his “people” the “poorest of the poor”, yes, folks like me that unfortunately can easily be subject of stereotypes and discrimination from the same system intended to protect and provide for our safety.
When Catholics joined hand in an effort to heal and clean up Baltimore after the riots, all Father Sterling could say about the April 27 violence was simple but precise when he stated  that this event

“SPEAKS TO ME VERY LOUDLY THAT WE STILL HAVE GREAT DIVIDE IN THIS COMMUNITY, WITH THE HAVES AND HAVE NOTS. OBVIOUSLY THE REMNANTS OF RACISM STILL AFFECT US IN TREMENDOUS WAYS…..”I THINK IT RAISES OPPORTUNITY FOR DEVELOPMENT OF SOME KIND OF ONGOING CONVERSATION BETWEEN THE CITY, COMMUNITIES AND CHURCH.”(Catholic Review)

Since the Freddie Gray crisis, Father Sterling has continued his community based efforts to improve the lot in the society. Without doubt, his contributions were instrumental to the emergence of the Shoprite Grocery store opposite Calvin Rodwell Elementary School by working with the BUILD organization to help transform our city from joints for drugs, crimes and prostitution into an abode of haven for peace, comfort and safe neighborhood.

Call for Greater Recognition

Father Sterling is a custodian and an epitome of the spirituality of the African- American Catholic faithful, while at the same time recognizing and appreciating the innumerable diversities of the gifts of the Holy Spirit among the various ethnic groups in the church of God. This inclination is very evident in the manifestation of both the charismatic and Afro-centric ways of worshiping at the New All Saints Catholic Church. It has the aura of real Catholicism and a unique touch of Pentecostal in terms of the music and liturgical dancers.
I have no question in my mind that Rome is already aware of the uncountable ways that Father Sterling has continued to make the Catholic Church relevant especially to the African- American communities in spite of the inclination toward Pentecostalism, nevertheless I am personally of the opinion that if there is any way or means available to elevate him, the church must as a matter of fact pursue such path for posterity sake in the name of Jesus Christ.

Having served the Roman Catholic Church and carry the burden of being the representative of the people of color, especially of African- Americans for over four decades, it will only be a token of appreciation by both the Archdiocese of Baltimore and Rome to manifest to the faithful that those who tread the path of righteousness and carry their cross even in the midst of untold hardship deserve physical recognition, even as they await their own crown of glory following the transition from this beautiful world made wicked by man’s inhumanity to man.
